Smethwick 'Beacon' commission

The Smethwick Beacon concept used the history of Chance's Glass factory and their manufacture of glass lens for over 2400 lighthouse as the starting point for the design. Five drums of various heights were arranged in a group and located in the central courtyard of the new build Smethwick Academy.

Each drum has different treatments to their sides; two drums are constructed as gabians and infilled with glass cuttle collected from the site, another has quotations relating to the history of the site laser cut into the stainless steel sides, and another has repeat tool patterns derived from pupil drawings.

The drums were designed to be used as either informal seating or as elements that could be leaned on by pupils and site visitors.
